Alimony
An alimony award in Maryland is focused on enabling
an economically dependent spouse to become self-supporting. There are
a number of factors the courts consider in determining whether to award
alimony, and the amount and duration thereof, including:
Including the following:
• Time necessary for the party seeking alimony
to gain sufficient education
or training to enable the party to find suitable employment
• Standard of living the parties established during the marriage
• Circumstances that contributed to the estrangement of the parties
• Physical and mental condition of each party
• Ability of the party from whom alimony is sought to meet that
party's needs
while meeting the needs of the party seeking alimony
• Financial needs and financial resources of each party
• Age of each party
Indefinite alimony may be awarded where the dependent
spouse cannot be expected to become self-supporting because of age, illness,
infirmity or disability.
